LASIK

What is LASIK (Laser Vision Correction)?

LASIK (Laser-Assisted In-Situ Keratomileusis) is an FDA-approved refractive surgery that reduces the need for  glasses or contact lenses. It has been refined over the last two decades to provide vision correction with a very high level of precision. Our San Diego LASIK specialists use laser to reshape the surface of the eye allowing it to focus light more precisely.  LASIK is performed with an excimer laser which works by breaking intra-cellular bonds and evaporating tissue on the surface of the eye. The excimer LASER does not penetrate tissue, thus making it safe for ocular surface treatment for our San Diego LASIK patients.

Am I a good candidate for LASIK?

San Diego LASIK patients who are near-sighted (myopic), farsighted (hyperopic), and astigmatic are all potential candidates for laser vision correction.  Certain individuals with very thin corneas or with corneal ectasia (called keratoconus) are not good candidates for LASIK. People with severe dry eyes are not good candidates for LASIK. Certain systemic diseases (such as diabetes) and certain infectious conditions (such as HSV1 infection) can also make some individuals not good LASIK candidates. Our San Diego LASIK surgeons will conduct a very thorough comprehensive eye examination prior to surgery in order to assure the safety of all San Diego LASIK patients and patiently answer all questions prior to surgery.

The LASIK Procedure

The LASIK procedure itself usually takes about ten to fifteen minutes to complete and typically requires no needles or stitches. Our San Diego LASIK surgeons use the safest advanced technologies to provide you with the best possible outcome for your LASIK surgery and to reduce the chance of any complications.

During the LASIK procedure, we first reflect back a thin layer of tissue from the surface of the eye using an IntraLase Femtosecond laser and a blunt instrument. We then use the state-of-the-art VISX S4 tracking excimer laser to resurface your cornea and treat your eye prescription. The procedure can help improve most eye prescriptions including nearsightedness, farsightedness, and astigmatism. Our San Diego LASIK patients usually see improvement in their vision within a few hours of their surgery and are often able to return to normal activities within a day or two.
