Conjunctivitis

Conjunctivitis is a term that describes inflammation in the outer layer of soft tissue that covers the white surface of the eye. It can be caused by anything from viral or bacterial infections, to systemic autoimmune disorders, to allergies. The most important thing to know about conjunctivitis is that its initial symptoms can be very similar to much more dangerous conditions such as corneal ulceration and orbital cellulitis. A careful examination by an expert eye professional can determine the cause of conjunctivitis symptoms and rule out potentially more concerning conditions that can present similarly to conjunctivitis. Upon the onset of ocular discomfort, redness, or discharge, it is important to seek eye examination in order to initiate proper course of treatment. This is particularly important if you are a contact lens wearer because you may be suffering from a corneal ulceration.
